Skadar Lake by Car: The Best Route and Where to Stop

Skadar Lake is the largest lake in the Balkans, shared between Montenegro and Albania, and home to hundreds of bird species — including one of the last major Dalmatian pelican colonies in Europe. Driving to the lake is one of the easiest day trips from Podgorica or the coast.
The route from Podgorica
Virpazar, the main gateway to the lake, is about a 30 to 40 minute drive from Podgorica. The road is flat and straightforward, with no mountain sections, making it an easy outing without much special preparation.
The route from the coast
If you're starting from the coast, Skadar Lake is usually reached via Bar or Sutomore, from where the road climbs toward Virpazar through hilly but well-maintained terrain with a handful of switchbacks. This route takes a bit longer than the one from Podgorica, but offers lovely views over the lake as you descend toward Virpazar from the surrounding hills.
Virpazar: the starting point
Virpazar is a small lakeside town where boat tours for bird-watching and sightseeing on the lake depart. If a boat tour is on your plan, book ahead during the bird nesting season, in spring and early autumn.
Pavlova Strana: the most photographed viewpoint
A few kilometers from Virpazar sits the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, known for its view of the Crmnica River making a sharp bend through the greenery before it reaches the lake — one of Montenegro's most recognizable photos. A short but steep forest path leads up to it.
The Crmnica wine route
The region around the lake is known for its vineyards and the local vranac wine. A handful of smaller wineries along the road offer tastings, so it's easy to pair a lakeside drive with a short wine tour.
Skadar Lake National Park
Most of the lake and the surrounding area is protected as a national park. Entry to certain sites and boat tours may involve a fee, so it's worth checking current terms and pricing directly with tour operators or at the park entrance before you go, since conditions can change from season to season.
Things to do around the lake
- Kayaking or boating: a few spots in Virpazar and nearby villages rent out kayaks for exploring the calmer parts of the lake independently
- Cycling: the flatter stretches around the lake suit cycling well, though you'll need to bring your own bike or arrange a rental in advance
- Bird-watching: spring and early autumn are the best times, when bird activity is at its peak
- Wine and local food tastings: many villages around the lake serve home cooking, with lake fish as a local specialty
When to visit the lake
Spring (April to June) is when the lake is greenest and bird activity is at its highest. Summer brings higher temperatures and typically a lower water level than in spring. Early autumn brings more comfortable temperatures back along with a second migration season, making it a good alternative for visiting outside the summer crowds.
Pairing it with other destinations
Skadar Lake pairs easily with a visit to Bar or Ulcinj if you're coming from the southern coast, or with a short stop in Podgorica on the way back toward the capital. The route around the lake also passes near several monasteries and old fortifications, so it's easy to add short cultural stops along the way.
Driving tips
- The road around the lake is mostly a narrow country lane — drive slower than you would on the main highways
- In summer, bring enough water; shade is scarce on the open stretches
- The best light for photos from Pavlova Strana is early morning
Why a car with better clearance helps here
Some of the country roads around the lake, especially the ones leading to smaller viewpoints or villages off the main road, aren't always in the best condition. A car with a bit more ground clearance and all-wheel drive makes getting around those stretches easier, without needing to slow to a crawl over every uneven patch.
For the full outing — Virpazar, a boat tour, and Pavlova Strana — plan half a day to a full day, depending on how long you want to linger at each stop. For a trip to Skadar Lake, Virage Montecito rents Subaru vehicles that handle the flat road from Podgorica and the narrower country lanes around the lake itself equally well.
